Diesel fuels are either straight run streams or cracked components from catalytic cracking unit or thermal cracked units. When cracked components are present in the diesel fuel, they tend to form sediment and gum storage. Fuel deterioration can lead to engine failure, engine malfunctioning and lower engine performance. Increasing demands for middle distillate fuels forces refiners to blend significant amount of cracked stocks in the diesel pool. The blends typically degrade the color and can form gums and sludge.
Instability of diesel can be due to numerous factors; olefins, the presence of water, nitrogen, acidic compounds and oxygen containing compounds. And the presence of trace metal increases the challenge of keeping fuel stable.
Potential stability problems can be treated by different methods: new processing technologies, upgraded blend stocks, improved blending capabilities and the application of the right chemical additives. These chemicals act by inhibiting oxidation and stabilizing the degradative components to meet the stability specifications. They also provide the refiner with flexibility to use the available hydro‐treating capacity to desulfurize the diesel, enabling them to meet the new stringent specifications. It also provides flexibility for the oil trader or terminal handling team to blend the components in the most profitable manner to meet the fuel specification as per the global standards.
